PhD position in semantics at the Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf (Germany), research, project work – The Department of Linguistics, Program in Semantics, at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (Germany), has one funded PhD position starting July 1, 2020 (the earliest date) until June 30, 2023 (with a possibility of an extension). The funding is in accordance with the German public service salary scale E13 TV-L, 65%.
The successful candidate will have an M.A. or a B.A. degree in linguistics (or a related field) with a broad background in semantics and pragmatics. Moreover, experience with computational modelling of linguistic data or experience with empirical research (experimental, corpus-based) into linguistic meaning is desirable, and some background in philosophy of language and mind would also be advantageous. The PhD position is funded by the DFG-grant awarded for the project “Individuation of eventualities and abstract things”, PI Hana Filip, external collaborators Jeff Pelletier and Scott Grimm. The DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft-German Research Association) is the main research funding agency in Germany. The Ph.D. student is expected to work closely with a postdoctoral researcher, the P.I. and external collaborators. The point of departure for this project is the prima facie parallelism between the grammatical reflexes of countability of nominal and verbal predicates. The main focus is on abstract nouns and verbal predicates, and specifically on the ways in which entities in their denotation are identified and individuated. The criteria of individuation for physical entities denoted by concrete nouns rely on their distinctive relation to space and time. The individuation of entities in the denotation of abstract nouns and verbal predicates is considerably more mysterious, not the least because for some such entities the relation to space and time is more complex or outright puzzling, while others are taken as independent of space and time. The successful PhD candidate will mainly contribute to the part of the project having to do with verbal predicates, shaping it according to their background and interests. |
